Scholarships for Musicians

A KAAA scholarship will send member Lisa Fowler to a grantwriting course at Wichita State University in March 2006. As a part of this course, Lisa will write a grant application on behalf of KAAA. KAAA hopes to soon be able to receive funding grants in order to further our mission to promote acoustic music and music education.

KAAA has provided financial assistance to musicians who are traveling to contests and competitions.

KAAA helped send members Aaron Moreland and Dustin Arbuckle to the Blues contest in Memphis in 2004 and 2005.

KAAA helped to send members Terry Whetstone and Rik Stevenson’s band Passing Through to the Indian Summer Music Awards in Milwaukee, Wisconsin September 9-12, 2005.

In 1998 KAAA sponsored a concert – “Band Aid” – to raise funds for the Derby High School Marching Band’s trip to perform in the Rose Bowl Parade.

KAAA also donated funds to help send the Robinson Middle School Orchestra to Chicago to perform at a national music educators’ convention.

PAT Fund

The Performers Assistance Trust was created in honor of Wichita musician Pat McJimsey. The PAT Fund provides emergency assistance to musicians in need.

Guitars for Kids

Bryan Masters and the Singer/Songwriter circle, which meets monthly at the Artichoke Sandwich Bar, recorded a CD with the idea that the proceeds would be used to provide instruments for needy children for Christmas. KAAA and the Artichoke joined the project by hosting and sponsoring a concert to promote and sell the CD’s. Local bands auctioned off house concerts and contributed those funds to the cause. Enough money was raised to provide10 guitars and one mandolin to Kansas kids for Christmas 2004.

Guitars for Kids 2005 was another success. Once again, Bryan Masters and the Singer/Songwriter circle recorded a CD, with the proceeds from sales used to provide instruments for needy Kansas children. KAAA and the Artichoke again joined the project by hosting and sponsoring a fundraising concert. Special thanks also go to Barney Byard Promotions for donating a pair of tickets we gave away at the event. From donations and the proceeds of CD sales, a total of 12 guitars and gig bags were donated to needy Kansas kids for Christmas 2005.

The Second String Project

The Second String Project is a campaign to collect and distribute used guitar strings to needy musicians throughout the world. This effort will help keep musical creativity alive in countries where it might otherwise die.
